Hallux abducto valgus

Reading time: 5 min | Last updated: 17 september 2026

A day out, a walk into town or simply getting on with everything you have planned. Your feet take you everywhere you need to go. When you have hallux abducto valgus, the shoes you choose can make a real difference to how your feet feel throughout the day. It affects the position of the big toe and can make walking become uncomfortable. That’s why finding the right fit matters.

Best shoes for bunions: Gummy HV

What is hallux abducto valgus?

Hallux abducto valgus occurs when the big toe gradually moves towards the other toes, while the joint at the base of the big toe moves outwards. This creates the characteristic bump on the inside of the foot.

For some people, it causes few problems. For others, the area can become sensitive, red or painful – particularly when wearing shoes that are too narrow or put pressure on the joint. That can make choosing shoes a little more complicated. A shoe might look wide enough, but what really matters is whether it gives your foot enough space in the right places.

Causes of hallux abducto valgus

The main cause of hallux abducto valgus is unfortunately not yet understood. However, there are some instances that can increase the growth of a bunion.

  • Hereditary: unfortunately, bunions can be hereditary.
  • Shoes: the shoes you wear can put extra pressure on the big toe, which can cause a bunion to form.
  • Foot position: the position of your foot can also increase the risk of getting bunions.

What should you look for in shoes for hallux abducto valgus?

If you have hallux abducto valgus, space is your best friend. Your toes should be able to sit naturally inside the shoe without being squeezed together. In particular, there should be enough room around the widest part of your forefoot.

Soft and flexible materials can also help. A rigid upper may press directly against the bunion, while a more flexible material can adapt more easily to the shape of your foot.

Also pay attention to these features when shopping shoes for hallux abducto valgus:

  • Enough room at the forefoot: so there is less pressure around the big-toe joint.
  • Soft or stretch materials: particularly around sensitive areas of your foot.
  • An adjustable fit: laces, straps or other adjustable fastenings help you adapt the shoe to your foot.
  • Good cushioning and support: to make walking feel more comfortable throughout the day.
  • A removable footbed: useful if you prefer to wear your own orthotics of insoles.

Stretch where your foot needs it

Not every foot has the same shape – and that’s exactly why some Wolky shoes are made with the Stretch2Fit method.

Our S2F styles use stretch material in carefully chosen areas of the upper. Rather than squeezing the foot into a fixed shape, the material gives where your foot needs a little extra room. This can be nice around a bunion (or other sensitive areas).

The result? More freedom for your foot, without giving up the support you need to keep going.

A wider size might not be the answer

Hallux abducto valgus doesn’t automatically mean you need an extra-wide shoe. Some people have a relatively narrow heel combined with a wider forefoot. Others don’t even have a wider forefoot, but just an overall narrow foot. In these cases, your feet might not benefit from a wider size. Not even if you have a hallux abducto valgus.

It’s important to look at the overall fit rather than simply choosing a larger size. Going up a shoe size (in width or even length) to create more room can leave you with too much space elsewhere and may cause your foot to move around inside the shoe. This can create other types of foot problems, such as blisters and calluses.

Look for extra room right around the hallux abducto valgus. So, look for shoes specialy designed for people with bunions. Wolky has an entire collection with shoes for bunions. These shoes feature extra space right around the hallux abducto valgus. They’re created on a different type of last, that creates extra room around the big toe.
