Is walking barefoot good for bunions?

If you have a bunion, taking your shoes off can feel like an instant relief. No seams pressing against the side of your foot, no tight toe box and plenty of room for your toes. But does that mean walking barefoot is actually good for bunions? The short answer: it depends. Walking barefoot can give your toes more freedom, but whether it feels comfortable depends on your feet, the surface you’re walking on and how much support you need.
Can walking barefoot help with bunions?
Walking barefoot gives your toes the freedom to spread naturally. There’s no shoe restricting the forefoot or rubbing against the bunion, which may make it feel more comfortable.
Barefoot walking also allows the muscles in your feet to work without the support of a shoe. But that doesn’t mean it will correct a bunion. It might put even more pressure on the bunion. If you’re used to supportive footwear, suddenly spending long periods barefoot can feel very different.

When is it better to wear shoes?
There are plenty of moments when a good pair of shoes can be the better choice. Obviously when you’re going outside, wearing shoes is non-negotiable. Cushioning and support can help keep you moving comfortably.
If your feet hurt while walking barefoot at home, you’d maybe be better off wearing shoes inside the house as well. That doesn’t mean you have to wear your toughest winter boots, but a comfortable and sturdy house shoe can be a great option as well.
The important thing is to choose shoes that don’t undo the freedom your feet have when you’re barefoot. So, choose shoes with extra space for the bunion. Look for shoes with enough space around the forefoot and materials that stretch a bit. A narrow or rigid shoe can squeeze the toes together and put pressure directly on the bunion.
What shoes are best for bunions?
If you have bunions, the right fit is especially important. Your toes should have enough room to sit naturally, without the side of the shoe pressing against the sensitive joint.
Look for features such as:
- Plenty of room around the forefoot to give your toes the space they need.
- Soft or flexible uppers to help reduce pressure on sensitive areas.
- Stretch materials are useful when you need a little extra give around the bunion.
- Adjustable fastenings such as laces or straps for a personalised fit.
- Good cushioning and support to stop your feet from getting tired fast.

Give your feet room to move
At Wolky, we believe a shoe should work with your foot, rather than asking your foot to adapt to the shoe. Your feet should bring you wherever you want to be, adjusting easily to whatever the day brings you. We believe in the importance of good shoes.
That’s why selected Wolky shoes feature our Fit2Feet method. These shoes feature stretch material in places where your foot may need more room, allowing the upper to adapt more easily around sensitive areas such as a bunion. Combine that with supportive soles, adjustable fastenings and removable footbeds, and you have shoes designed for days when there’s plenty you want to do.
Our HV collection also features shoes for bunions. There’s a slight difference to the making of these collections. The shoes in our HV collection are made on a different last. The last has a built-in ‘bunion’ which gives the shoe more space at the right spot during the fabrication.

Barefoot or shoes with bunions? Listen to your feet
Walking barefoot can feel wonderfully freeing when you have bunions, particularly because there’s nothing pressing against the side of your foot (or even better, the side of your bunion).
Luckily, you don’t have to choose between going barefoot and wearing restrictive footwear. The right shoes can give your feet free room while providing the cushioning and support you need when you’re out and about. We believe your feet should have the space they need to take you wherever you want to go.
