First signs of bunions

Reading time: 3 min | Last updated: 13 February 2026

You might notice it one day while slipping out of your shoes at the end of the day. A small bump at the base of your big toe. A bit red, a bit tender. Not dramatic… yet.

That “pesky bump” is often the very first sign of a bunion (also known as hallux valgus).

The good news? If you spot the signs early, you can make simple changes that keep your feet happy for years to come.

First signs of bunions

Some of the first signs of bunions

1 | A small bump on the side of your big toe

This is usually the first thing you notice: a slight swelling on the inside of your foot, right at the base of your big toe. At first, it may only be visible when you really look for it.

It might stay like that, but it may also become more noticeable. It could be the beginning of a bunion.

2 | Redness or tenderness

In the early stages, the skin around the bump can feel sensitive. Your shoes may start rubbing in a spot where they never did before.

Narrow shoes or heels can make this worse, as they push your body weight into the ball of your foot and force the big toe inward. Not a particularly great feeling, that’s for sure.

3 | Your big toe starts leaning inward

One of the clearest early signs is when your big toe begins to angle toward your other toes. It may be subtle at first, but it can worsen over time. That inward movement is what gradually creates the bunion.

4 | Shoes no longer fit right

Shoes you’ve worn for years suddenly feel uncomfortable around the front of your foot. You may feel pressure exactly where the bump is forming.

5 | Aching after a long day

In the beginning, pain isn’t always constant. Some women live with bunions for years without much discomfort.

But you might notice a dull ache after a long walk, tenderness after standing all day, and relief when you take your shoes off.

What can you do when you spot the first signs of bunions?

Here’s the truth: a bunion won’t disappear on its own. Surgery it the only way to truly remove it completely. And even that isn’t always guaranteed.

The simplest and most effective step is to start wearing the right shoes.

When you give your toes space and your feet proper support, you can:

  • Reduce pressure on the bunion
  • Slow down progression
  • Prevent unnecessary pain
  • Walk more comfortably
